A recent global survey has found that 80% of people believe that plasma displays offer better picture performance than LCDs.
According to a global market research company, consumers have a clear preference for plasma displays in the five countries they surveyed – China, Japan, England, France and Germany. Participants were asked which technology provided the best overall image quality in terms of sharpness, colour, response speed, contrast, black depth and detail.
Between 70 - 80% of respondents universally claimed that plasma had the best image quality when viewing screens side by side – 88% in China, 80% in Japan, 80% in Germany, 70% in England, and 69% in France.
The plasma and LCD screens used in the viewing tests were set to normal mode, tuned by technicians with four-minute sequences shown to the respondents while all brand names and identifying information was hidden.
"The preference for the image quality of plasma screens came through strongly in larger screens, because viewers feel less fatigue with plasma screens compared to LCD screens at the 40- and 50-inch level," said an industry official.
"What this test really shows is that the aggressive marketing by LCD industry players has distorted public perception past the point of reality."
