According to reports from DigiTimes, Toshiba plan to push HD DVD as the high definition format of choice, by releasing HD DVD recorders in China next year, ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
Apparently, Chinese TV broadcasters have predicted that eight million LCD TVs will be sold in China this year, with the demand rising to 10 million next year.
It will be interesting to see how HD DVD and Blu-ray fare in China. In October last year we reported that China would get its own high definition disc format, and was also keen to invest in red-laser EVD and HD-FVD technology.
That seems to have quietened down somewhat this year. Will our Western 'standards' prevail in China, too?
In any case, the Olympics should generate a fair amount of interest for high definition in general.
