Toshiba planning $99 HD-A2 player special promotion?

toshiba-hd-dvd.jpgThe DVD Dossier has picked up on an interesting email sent out to potential delegates for the Home Media Expo starting this week which suggests that Toshiba is planning a special "one week only" deal on their HD-A2 HD DVD player

The email reads:

TOSHIBA HD DVD PLAYER for ONLY $99 PLUS 3 FREE HD DVD’s

For one week only, starting July 22, 2007, Toshiba will be offering the HD A2 player for only $99. With your purchase you will also receive 3 HD DVDs.

It could be a publicity stunt for show attendees only, or it could be rolled out, albeit briefly, to consumers. It won't make a blind bit of difference to UK and European HD DVD hopefuls, but it could at least herald the first sub-$100 high definition player that people have been clamouring for.

Of course what we'd really like is consistently lower prices for high definition hardware, as in fact Toshiba has already promised, but the occasional marketing stunt doesn't hurt if consumers are in the right place at the right time.
