IFA 2007: Samsung unveils first dual-format player details: BD-UP5000
We first reported on Samsung's BD-UP5000 player back in April. The company has now provided more detailed specifications for their first high definition disc player to play both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs.
It will play both disc formats at up to 1080p and either 24fps (so-called true film mode) or up to 60fps, dependent on disc content. It also features HQV video selectable up-conversion processing.
Audio-wise, it has both stereo and 7.1-channel outputs, coaxial and optical digital audio out, and supporting Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and dts HD.
It features the latest HDMI 1.3 digital interface, and while there's no mention of what interactivity it supports (apart from stating it will support local storage and picture-in-picture on HD DVD), there's no reason to believe that this won't be catered for, given that from the end of October, all Blu-ray players must support interactive features, and it's a standard part of the HD DVD specification. At least, let's hope it's not a half-baked dual-format player.
It will be available sometime before Christmas, price to be confirmed.
