Finally, another manufacturer has entered the HD-DVD market to offer some competition to Toshiba. Onkyo has announced details of its DV-HD806 player, which is actually developed from blueprints licensed from Toshiba and is based on the HD-XE1.
The player will feature a similar Ethernet port and Internet connectivity to the Toshiba model. But Onkyo is keen to point out that it's added a few enhancements along the way with a specification that includes support for 1080p 24fps and lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio bitstream pass through modes – features that will be included in Toshiba’s next range of HD-DVD players.
The player also includes the HVQ Reon VX video processing, which claims to enhance standard-definition upconverting and HD deinterlacing.
The company is also a supporter of Blu-ray so we may see a competing high-definition player from them or even a dual format player in the future.
The DV-HD806 will initially be launched in the US this autumn priced around £450, with plans to extend it to other markets shorty after.
