Panasonic extend plasma life to over 42 years

Panasonic%20logo.jpgPanasonic has claimed that its latest range of 1080p plasma HDTVs will play for 100,000 hours before reaching half brightness – the equivalent of 42 years based on an average viewing time of six and a half hours a day.

The company rates its 720p plasmas to play for 60,000 hours, which means around 25 years of viewing. "What makes this milestone even more significant is that this rating is to half brightness, not until end of life cycle. Even after 42 years, on average, our Plasma HDTVs could still be able to provide their owners with clear, crisp colorful high definition images,” said Dr. Paul F, Liao, chief technology officer, Panasonic.

The company are also keen to stress its devotion to environmental concerns. "Last year we were the first flat panel manufacturer to eliminate lead from all of our Panasonic Plasma displays. To date, we remain the only flat panel manufacturer to do that. Now, with our 1080p Plasma HDTVs rated at 100,000 hours to half brightness, our Plasma TVs could provide consumers with significantly more years of viewing pleasure,”added Liao.

The life cycles of TVs should be independently tested - I don't trust manufacturers.

Six and a half hours a day is too low.

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TVs last much longer for example Sony- and Panasonic CRTs.

Plasma manufacturers should include 'burn-in' repairs within warranties if they trust plasma TV products.

My attitude is that any person who buys a plasma is simply gambling that 'burn-in' will not occur.
