Paramount and Dreamworks to exclusively support HD-DVD
The HD-DVD camp received a major boost with the announcement that major Hollywood studios, Paramount and Dreamworks Animation, will exclusively support the HD-DVD format globally – after nearly a year of releasing titles in both high-definition formats.
The commitment includes all movies distyributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation.
The first releases will be the Will Ferrell comedy, Blades of Glory (August 12th), followed by summer blockbusters, Transformers and Shrek the Third.
The studios apparently made the decision after extensive evaluation of the current market offerings – choosing HD-DVD’s market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs.
“The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD,” stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office.
