Paramount/Dreamworks won't replenish Blu-ray film stock

bluray.jpgAs we alluded to last week, Paramount and Dreamworks have now confirmed that they will no longer be restocking any of their Blu-ray titles, having now pledged allegiance to HD DVD.

Additionally, the two companies have backtracked on some Blu-ray titles announced before they switched sides. These include Face Off, Flashdance, Blades of Glory, and Top Gun.

If you want an existing title in Blu-ray format, you'd better be quick. Titles won't be removed from retail shelves, but there's no guarantee of large stocks.

For those that are bothered about absolute numbers of releases, All Things HiDef has calculated that the HD DVD format now has more active titles available — 279 — compared to 257 Blu-ray titles, as the discontinued discs accounted for just over 11% of US Blu-ray releases.

All Blu-ray titles are still available to rent, though a representative from Netflix said that if the studios withdrew the Blu-ray license, then they'd stop renting them out.
