Philips' CEO: "HD has developed somewhat slower than we had expected" — but Blu-ray is still king
We've already reported that the Blu-ray Disc Association is looking forward to IFA this year, and now CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics, Rudy Provoost, is trying to convince us all that Blu-ray is winning the battle.
That's despite his disappointment that HD has developed slower than expected, thanks in part to the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Speaking in an interview just before IFA opened, he said, "There are highlights, such as last year's World Cup or next year's Beijing Olympics. But to give it the next big boost, the movie studios have to release more movies in Blu-ray or HD DVD formats."
"I know we have been talking about this for two years now," he continued. "We think that if you look at the consumer proposition going forward, Blu-ray should be successful. We are seeing signs of momentum. But this emerging market is still going in many directions at the same time and the jury is still out."
Expect the war of words to continue throughout IFA 2007.
