Pioneer has announced that it will launch its first Full HD resolution plasma displays in the US this October in an attempt to catch up manufacturers like Matsushita (aka Panasonic).
The company’s plasma sales showed a quarterly loss recently due to fierce competition from rivals and a loss of market share to LCD designs.
The new 50in and 60in 1080p (1920x1080) models feature Pioneer’s deeper black technology but with prices between $6,000 and $8,000 they will be more expensive than similar models from the likes of Panasonic.
"We are determined to distance ourselves from price competition and move on to a new stage to offer an exciting experience for our customers," said Pioneer Managing Director, Shinji Yasuda.
Pioneer plans to ship 720,000 plasma screens by next March but that compares to Matsushita’s target to sell 5 million screens during the same period.
