Adult industry still slow to adopt next generation formats

original.jpegAlthough adult films were credited with fueling the early adoption of VHS and DVD, distributors have been surprisingly slow to embrace next generation disc formats like Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

In the early months of the high-definition format war, it was expected that porn would play a major part in deciding the eventual winner – but so far there have been minimal releases in both formats.

There were early indications that Blu-ray backers had sought to prevent the release of pornographic material on the format. But the Blu-ray Disc Association ultimately denied those reports and by late April, Vivid Entertainment released its first Blu-ray title with Debbie Does Dallas…Again.

To date, DVD Empire lists 16 adult titles in HD DVD and only three in Blu-ray.

Several factors have been suggested to explain the slow adoption of porn by next generation formats including the higher costs of next generation discs and the apparent belief among adult distributors that they should ignore HD formats and focus their efforts on IP delivery of high-definition content.

However, while adult content is still scarce, there are signs of change. There has been a steady increase of new HD adult titles with a leading distributor offering two new titles in the last month alone – Stood Up (HD DVD) and Debbie Loves Dallas (Blu-ray).
