Channel 4 announce new HDTV service
Channel 4 is the latest terrestrial broadcaster to announce a high-definition TV service. It will be the first of the ‘big five’ to launch a HD simulcast of its main channel.
The schedule is due to be launched in December and will be available free of charge on the Sky HD platform. So, although Channel 4 HD will be available without prescription, customers will still need a Sky HD box and viewing card.
Ron Henwood, media director at Channl 4, said, “Channel 4’s aim is to offer our viewers maximum flexibility in accessing our high quality programmes and content at a time and in the format of their choosing,
"Be it sports, movies, documentaries or entertainment, Sky HD customers can now access the richest selection of content in HD.”
The BBC is already airing a trial HD service on the Sky platform, but rather than a direct simulcast it features heavily repeated programmes from BBC One and BBC Two.
It’s one of 12 HD channels on Sky with over 5,000 hours of programming available monthly.
Has the content to fuel the high-definition revolution finally arrived?
