As we reported late last year, China is adopting its own version of the HD DVD standard, to be called CH DVD (China High Definition DVD).
It's been developed by the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Centre (OMNERC), and is a very close relative of the "standard" HD DVD format. It apparently boasts stronger copy-protection features, though it seems as if this won't effectively stem the flow of these DVDs from China to the West, as HD DVD and CH DVD are compatible, in that players with the appropriate software can read both formats.
However, as per usual, it's never that simple. We also reported that China and Taiwan were investing in EVD and HD-FVD red-laser technology, and that CHLG has lent its support to Blu-ray.
China will be an interesting emerging market to watch, as it's bound to have a knock-on effect in other markets.
