Dolby Laboratories has been a pioneer in the field of sound enhancement for more than 40 years. You will have heard the company’s audio technology being used in films, music, video games and even multimedia files on your PC.
Dolby’s Jack Buser recently spoke to IBD about the future directions of sound technology in the consumer electronics market. He believes that the high-definition era is upon us and there are numerous devices using Dolby technology to support HD images with HD sound.
According to Buser, it’s sound that conveys the emotion when it comes to a high-definition experience.
“For the consumer at home watching high-definition TV, eventually it's going to be the sound that will bring them into the experience and make them forget they are sitting in the living room.
“It's sound that causes the consumer to suspend disbelief. If you have great sound, you come out of your everyday experience and escape to this other world,” he said.
Buser also noted how home cinema has evolved dramatically over the last few years, “We're seeing technologies emerge that 10 years ago would have been very hard to predict,” he noted.
But, in his opinion, the most exciting trend is the arrival of Dolby headphones – a set of standard headphones that can deliver a full 5.1 surround sound experience.
“So many people today are enjoying their entertainment on the go, on portable media players. Another thing I'm spending a lot of time with personally is Dolby Digital Plus (an audio compression system for high-definition sound).
“Dolby Digital Plus can solve a lot of problems because it can deliver full DVD-quality, 5.1-channel sound at half the data rate of what we were doing on DVD.
“Another exciting trend is 5.1 channel camcorders, which complement the boom in user-generated content,” he continued.
“Sony and Panasonic have released camcorders that can capture 5.1 channel sounds. If you're videotaping your kid's birthday, not only do you get the sound in front of you but get the sound of kids all around you. It sounds just like the pros.”
