Triple-layer 51GB HD DVD approved by DVD Forum

hddvd.pngToshiba's triple-layer, 51GB capacity HD DVD, announced earlier in the year, has been given the official go-ahead by the DVD Forum.

Each layer holds 17GB of data - supposedly developers at Toshiba weren't content to release a 45GB triple-layer disc and still fall five gig short of the capacity of a dual-layer Blu-ray disc.

Those most likely to suffer, at present, if the disc gains widespread acceptance, are early adopters who already have HD DVD drives which may not read data either from the additional layer, or in the new format required to squeeze two gigabytes extra onto the existing layers.
