The latest US research from Jupiter Research shows that less than a quarter (24%) of those surveyed are considering buying into high definition media (HD DVD / Blu-ray), thanks to the abundance of standard DVDs, the availability of cheaper DVD players which can upscale them to near-HD quality, and broadband penetration which has encouraged users to download content from the Web.
“The real competitor that both of these formats face is not each other, but rather [these] low-cost DVD players … that pass the ‘good enough’ test for most consumers,” said Michael Gartenberg, VP, Jupiter Research and author of the report.
These factors are interesting for, particularly in the case of downloaded content, it shows that many consumers are more interested in the availability and quantity of content than its visual/audial quality.
