Hitachi has developed a 47in display that claims an enhanced dark room contrast ratio of 8,000,000:1. The display uses the company’s hybrid monitor technology, which combines LCD panel and LCD projector technology.
The new technology uses a projector as a backlight system for an LCD panel – the contrast rating was calculated through multiplying the panel’s and the projector’s contrast ratios. The display produces better gradations in dark scenes since both the panel and the projector control gradations, according to Hitachi.
Although the display isn’t scheduled for mass production, Hitachi say they can commercialise the screen anytime if there is demand from customers.
Using a short focal length projector, Hitachi can reduce display thickness to around 30cm. The panel itself features a full HD 1920x1080 resolution while the projector’s resolution is 1280x720.
Hitachi has used the same hybrid monitor technology to develop a 3D display using depth defused 3D technology, which enables three dimensional expression by displaying two layered images of different brightness.
Hitachi will present both types of displays at CEATAC Japan 2007.
