Japan offering high definition via fibre-optic lines

Japan's NTT national broadcasting corporation will begin offering high definition digital TV broadcasts via their fibre-optic network, as early as March 2008.

Though the Nikkei business daily's report named no sources, they cited the target of 25 million households using the service by 2010.

The move will allow NTT's subscribers to watch high definition, terrestrial digital broadcasts on their TVs and PCs, plus access pay-for video on demand services.

These plans are subject to licenses being granted by the Communications Ministry.
