We've already reported on Sony's BWU-200S 4x Blu-ray writer for notebook PCs, and now Optiarc — a joint venture between Sony and NEC — has unveiled its BC-5500A Blu-ray reader, aimed at manufacturers of mid-range notebook PCs.

It's a good all-round drive for those looking to provide Blu-ray playback on top of regular DVD and CD burning and playback functionality.

It's available now, retailing for around £165.
