A fairly technical press release has announced that Pioneer and Mitsubishi Kagaku have announced the use of organic dye recording film in Blu-ray recordable discs, and technology for recordable Blu-ray discs with metal nitride film.
In basic terms, it means that organic dye discs don't require large-scale investment in facilities. Instead, current coating facilities for CD-R and DVD-R can be used on BD-R production lines with only minor adjustments. This means lower-priced discs.
The companies are also successfully developing high performance BD-R discs with multiple layers and high speed recording.
