Both Sony and Toshiba have today announced that they've expanded their LCD TV manufacturing presence in Europe, to cope with the continuing rise in demand for flat panel high definition screens.

Sony has opened its new plant in Nitra, Slovakia (pictured). The factory employs state-of-the-art equipment and will produce large size, high-end BRAVIA LCD TVs. It commenced full scale production this month, and is expected to churn out three million LCD TVs every year, and employ 3,000 staff, by 2008.

It will jointly serve with Sony's plant in Barcelona as the company's main LCD TV factory, while the existing Trnava plant will produce tuners for the BRAVIA LCD TVs, as well as providing technical support for Sony's PlayStation products.

”The European LCD TV market is the largest of its kind and has a significant growth trend. To be successful for us means to be really flexible and fast. Sony’s factory in Nitra is the first new production site since the emergence of the LCD TV era. It plays a strategic role with regard to our production capacity, but also acts as a supply base with innovative operations,” said Takeshi Fukuda, the Corporate Executive of the TV Group.

Meanwhile, Toshiba has opened its new "Toshiba Television Central Europe" production and sales company for LCD TVs in Kobierzyce, southwest Poland.

Toshiba already manufactures LCD TVs in Europe at Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd. The new Polish plant provides a second production base that will support Toshiba in meeting growing demand and reinforcing its presence in the pan-European market.
They aim to be producing three million TVs by the year 2009, mainly focusing on large sized LCD TVs over 32 inches in size.
