Sony has stated that it's planning a firmware upgrade to the PS3 console, in order to allow it to better handle the interactive features of the Profile 1.1 Blu-ray specification, which becomes mandatory for all new Blu-ray players at the end of October.
There are no firm details on exactly what features the update will allow Sony's gaming console to access, or when it's coming, but it's likely to include true picture-in-picture functionality.
This is based on the words of Sony VP of advanced technologies, Don Eklund, who spoke at the recent HDTV DisplaySearch conference about next-generation interactivity, an area which HD DVD still believes it has an advantage in.
