Warner may be ready to exclusively support Blu-ray?
According to statements made by Warner's VP of high definition media, Dan Silverberg, to Home Media Magazine, the company may be currently reviewing its dual-format HD disc policy, and showing favouritism to Blu-ray.
Though nothing official has been said, Silverberg suggested that their strategy may be changing, now that hardware prices for both HD DVD and Blu-ray were falling, and with the perception that consumers didn't want to choose a format.
“When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”
As to their preference for Blu-ray, he said “We can definitely talk Blu-ray. We are committed to the format.”
Of course, nothing's conclusive, but if Warner do decide to move wholly to the Blu-ray camp, it could put HD DVD in rather a precarious position, with support from just two studios, particularly if they then "pulled a Paramount" and stopped producing their back catalogue in the dropped format.
