Blu-ray Profile 1.1 becomes mandatory in new players today
With November upon us, Blu-ray's most up-to-date specification becomes a mandatory requirement for all new hardware players to adhere to.
Profile 1.1 introduces a number of features, mainly interactive and web abilities, aimed at improving the functionality of Blu-ray discs, should studios wish to use them.
It's a part of the specification that's been missing from the required Blu-ray spec from the beginning, and has been used by the HD DVD camp to promote their format.
LG's dual-format BH200 is supposed to incorporate the latest spec, as we would expect Panasonic's DMP-BD30 to.
Getting titles to take advantage of the additional features may take a little longer, though. Terminator 3 on Blu-ray "fakes" picture-in-picture, and it could be January before content starts appearing.
