A number of leading projector manufacturers and technology providers have united to endorse a new international specification which will standardise the measurement of colour brightness and performance across different video projector hardware.
While black and white measurements are now fairly standard, consumers currently have no easy way of comparing how well projectors handle colour reproduction.
The Colour Brightness measurement will be measured in lumens, and take into account how brightly the three primary colours — red, blue, and green — can be produced.
If a projector can produce bright red, green and blue equal to the brightness of white, it can reproduce the true colour that the creators intended. If Colour Brightness does not equal or come close to the white brightness, colour images can appear dark, washed out and less accurate.
"Without this new metric, consumers are in the dark about color performance," said Karl Lang, president of Lumita. "Two projectors that both advertise 2,000 (white) lumens can have vastly different colour performance. Colour Brightness provides the information consumers have needed for a long time."
Working with colour engineers and industry experts, supporters will publish the test methods and studies exemplifying the metrics' utility and effectiveness. The test method will be submitted to major international standards bodies for acceptance.
