Who are they?
OK, we know who we are. Bear in mind, though, that there's no such thing as the average consumer.
Anyone regularly reading this site is likely to be highly knowledgeable on HD in general, and possibly an early adopter of the technology.
Most consumers have not invested in a dedicated high definition disc player yet.
What they should do
Don't rush in to buying Blu-ray just yet, thinking the "war" is cut and dried.
Don't be tempted by cheap deals on HD DVD players (even less so expensive deals).
Research the market, and determine if a high definition disc player is even warranted. An upscaling DVD player may suffice for now.
What they'll probably do (flippant)
Get confused.
Plug their DVD player into their HDTV and believe they're watching high definition film already.
Say "Blu-what?" and look confused.
Ask if the dirt cheap HD DVD player they found on eBay is a good deal.
What it means for us
Probably not a huge amount, for now. Let's face it, most people have only just started hearing about high definition discs.
OK, a lot of people are still getting to grips with Freeview.
Condescending? Sorry, but the average consumer doesn't actually care that much right now.
As for whether you care — I'm sure you've already made your mind up about HD DVD and Blu-ray.
