LG has announced that its fastest internal Blu-ray Disc rewriter, the GGW-H20L, is now available in the UK. The drive allows users to read both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs at up to six times speed, plus write Blu-ray discs at same speed.
Also coming is the GGC-H20L, a read-only drive for both formats. Blu-ray discs can be read at 6x speed, HD DVD at 3x speed, as well as being able to read and write CDs and DVDs.
Fiona Landsberg, marketing manager, LG Electronics says, “With the increased volume of data available today, the need for alternative storage options is rising rapidly. Not only are we choosing to store more data, such as digital images, music files and video, but we also continue to be bound by record keeping regulations, all of which take up precious space. LG’s revolutionary new 6x optical storage drive, the GGW-H20L, allows users to not only store massive volumes of data compactly, but it also does it in lightening speed. Our new 6x technology is set to transform the way we interact with data.”
These have been available for over a month, I've had mine since just after Christmas. Play.com have them at a good price.
So far I am quite pleased with it although the eject button doesn't line up well with my pc case and I can't get 5.1 soundtracks from HDDVD in synch when played with the supplied PowerDVD software, although Bluray 5.1 works fine.
Neither format can be output to 2 (HDCP compliant) screens at once so projector users won't be impressed at all.
Does anybody know of a better HD player program than PowerDVD?
Yeh. Old news I'm afraid. I got mine at Christmas too. They were easily available.
In my experience a very solid player and great to have whilst so much good stuff is still split between the two formats. Fast too.
Not experienced the sync problems Martin mentions. But most will need to upgrade from the OEM version of PowerDVD as it only supports 2-channel HD audio and upgrades available from the Cyberlink site do not work, you need to wait for your OEM to get round to releasing them.
