A new report from Understanding & Solutions suggests that the price of standalone HD DVD and Blu-ray players will decline "significantly" in the early part of 2008.
"Drive, chipset, and other system components are now benefiting from economies of scale," said Bill Foster, senior technology consultant for the firm.
He suggested that the cost of materials for a basic high definition player of either format would fall to under US$150. "That's going to impact the high street very soon, providing the consumer with a choice of low price players that allow consumer electronics companies a margin for profit," he continued.
By the year 2011, if both high definition disc formats survive, players will be universally available for under US$100. Apply whatever rip-off UK "exchange rate" you like to discover what prices we'll likely be paying.
