WirelessHD 1.0 specification launches, gains wide industry support

wirelesshd_logo.jpgThe WirelessHD specification, first announced back in October 2006, has reached version 1.0 and gained widespread approval from technology companies including Intel, LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony, and Toshiba.

The specification allows for high definition baseband video transmission on the 60GHz frequency band.

Unsurprisingly, those lovely people at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) have been working closely with the WirelessHD group to ensure that content protection remains a top priority. You wouldn't expect anything less, eh?

"The major motion picture studios are actively engaged in the development of innovative new solutions that give consumers greater flexibility and more choices for how and where they access and enjoy movies and television shows," said Jim Williams, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for the MPAA. "As this process evolves it is imperative to foster a secure environment that protects this high-value content from rampant theft and illegal redistribution. WirelessHD has worked closely with us in meeting these critical goals, and we are encouraged by WirelessHD's commitment to foster content protection in the wireless, digital age."

"Industry response to the creation of the WirelessHD group has significantly surpassed expectations and we look forward to broad industry adoption," stated John Marshall, Chairman of WirelessHD.

Expect to hear a lot more about WirelessHD this year, with the development of a compliance programme and test specification plan, and licensing of a logo to allow consumers to easily buy compliant equipment.
