Amazon to promote Blu-ray, still selling HD DVD

amazon_high_def_101.gifOnline retailer Amazon has announced that it will more prominently push the Blu-ray high definition disc format from now on, though it will continue to sell HD DVD products if consumers want them.

A statement on their web site reads: “In an effort to help demystify high-definition entertainment for consumers, Amazon.com, Inc. today announced its support for Blu-ray as the digital format of choice for customers. As part of this announcement, Amazon.com will more prominently promote Blu-ray hardware and software products on its website”.

The company claims that, since January, Blu-ray Disc sales have increased from around half of all high definition disc sales to over three-quarters.

The statement continues: “For the hundreds of thousands of HD DVD owners who may still wish to purchase products for that format, Amazon will continue to carry a wide assortment of HD DVD products, including the broadest selection of HD DVD movie titles”.

Amazon do appear to be making an effort to warn consumers that may not know about the demise of HD DVD. Their High-def 101 microsite does at least make it clear that Toshiba has discontinued the format, and when searching for HD DVD hardware, Amazon publish a "Product Alert" note, which is good.
