Japanese retailer swaps out HD DVD for Blu-ray

hddvd.pngIt's a shame that this story only benefits Japanese consumers, but the retailer Edion has said that, during March, consumers who bought a Toshiba HD DVD player can return them in exchange for a Blu-ray Disc player from Sony, Panasonic, or Sharp.

If the new machine is more expensive, consumers will have to pay the difference, but if it's cheaper, the store will refund the difference.

In addition, the retailer has said that it will continue to sell recorded and blank HD DVDs for as long as consumers demand them — that is, if production doesn't dry up.

The reasoning? "HD DVD customers can no longer use their purchases properly".

While a vaguely similar deal from Sony Germany has emerged, don't expect to see many retailers jumping on this bandwagon of goodwill.
