According to "insider sources", Microsoft may be ready to launch a Blu-ray add-on drive for the Xbox 360. Such a device could be ready as early as May this year.
It was fairly inconceivable that Microsoft wasn't already experimenting with Blu-ray, just in case HD DVD died, despite its protestations and belief that, ultimately, downloadable high definition content is the future.
Unsurprisingly, Sony said that they would welcome Microsoft into the Blu-ray arena. Michael Ephraim, MD of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, "It is quite logical for them as the PS3 has been very succesful in driving consumers to Blu-ray. In fact we believe that it has done more to win the format war than traditional Blu-ray player".
He foresaw no problems with Microsoft being granted a licence to work with Blu-ray.
