Paramount quietly moves back to Blu-ray
The Hollywood studio exodus from HD DVD is now complete, with Paramount the last studio to commit (or should that be recommit) to Blu-ray.
Rather quietly, the studio issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer. As we look to releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."
Janet Murray, who is director of Georgia Tech's masters and Ph.D. program in digital media, said that a single format with universal studio support was much more likely to succeed than two rival formats going head-to-head.
"It's a big victory for the consumer," she said, adding that there could now be a standardisation on how extras and other disc content is put together, leading to a much richer experience for the consumer.
She sees "much more content and much more breadth of content" adding that, "when people have these higher-end screens at home, they take great pleasure in them, and this will push ahead the delivery (of movies) in high-definition."
