Toshiba may move to the Blu side — for notebook optical drives

toshiba_sd-l912a_hd_dvd_slim_notebook_burner.jpgConsider this completely unconfirmed, but Toshiba may consider using Blu-ray Disc drives in future notebook PCs, even though it has stated that it won't be developing standalone Blu-ray players for the consumer market.

That's according to deputy general manager of HD DVD, Olivier VanWynendaele (who may be wondering quite what his job entails now).

Apparently, Toshiba is "still reviewing the strategy for our laptop range when it comes to the next generation format".

It will be an interesting one to watch. If Toshiba really are more interested in getting high definition content out in other formats, then I would have thought they'd just bypass putting Blu-ray onto their notebooks and include beefed up card readers or solid state discs.

Toshiba has previously made quite a big thing about having HD DVD installed on a range of its notebook PCs. No news on whether these will be phased out.
