Universal makes the Blu-ray switch
Universal has announced that it will cease production of HD DVDs, and instead switch to Blu-ray for future titles.
Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms, said that "the path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear".
"The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate. While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," he continued.
Though Universal is the only major studio to have solely supported HD DVD, it's unlikely that they haven't been investigating the possibility of producing Blu-ray discs.
It's not clear whether their back catalogue of HD DVD titles will be pressed on Blu-ray — given how young the high definition disc market is they'd probably be wise to do so.
