Russell T Davies: People won't stop watching Doctor Who if it's not in HD
Writer and Executive Producer of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies, hit out at BBC bosses for moving the hit TV show to an earlier 6.20pm time slot on Saturday evenings, claiming that they would lose 1.5m viewers as a consequence.
He also said that attempting to film the series in high definition would be far too expensive, and that it was "rubbish" to suggest that viewers would be lost purely because it remained in standard definition.
The issue surrounding a high-def Doctor Who has been rumbling since last year. As we reported last March:
The main issue, according to Julie Gardner, an executive producer for Doctor Who, is that, whereas Torchwood has maybe 10 or 20 special effects per episode, Doctor Who has a hundred or more.
"I think it would take more time for us to do our post-production, and I think it would be more costly. And I genuinely love the look that we've managed to achieve with our [directors of photography] and our grade on 'Doctor Who'," she told The Stage magazine.
In any case, after this series, which starts next month, Doctor Who will take a year out to allow its stars to work on other projects. So don't hold your breath for the high definition Doctor any time soon.
