Panasonic commits to OLED, plasma market share, joint venture with Pioneer
Now that Pioneer has ditched plasma panel production, they've partnered with Matsushita (who manufactures the Panasonic brand) to strengthen their "KURO" and "VIERA" brands.
The deal, which won't be finalised until May, will cover R&D, strategic production and supply of PDPs and modules, and "will bring about significant synergy effects" by combining KURO and NeoPDP technology. In other words, more eco-friendly, high luminance, high contrast, slim, high performance plasma TVs. No pressure then.
As we already knew, Matsushita will manufacture plasma panels for Pioneer, in time for new products arriving in Autumn 2009. The two companies will still supply their own brand TVs, but discuss what screen sizes they should sell.
Panasonic wants to grab 60% of the PDP market this year, 15% of the overall flat panel TV market, 25% for TVs over 37 inches, and 10% of the LCD market.
Panasonic has also announced that it intends to start production of OLED TVs "in the future".
