Disney has already committed to Blu-ray's interactive features when its first set of 2008 titles were announced at the start of the year, and CEO Bob Chapek reaffirmed that commitment during the unveiling of a 50th anniversary edition of "Sleeping Beauty" on Monday.
The interactive features found on the title. including on-screen chat rooms and video messaging, are just "our jumping-off point of what's to come," he said.
"The idea of my little girl being able to experience the movie and chat in real time with her grandparents across the country is very exciting to me," Chapek said. "We are introducing this important feature on 'Sleeping Beauty,' but imagine the possibilities of extending this to other titles such as 'High School Musical' or, eventually, ABC's hit show 'Lost.' Can you imagine the level of excitement that will create with the tweens or the rabid fan base of 'Lost'?"
Quite apart from the seemingly altruistic goal of bringing families from across the country together with the ability to interact with one another using the BD LIve technology, users will also gain points when they use the system, which can later be redeemed at the forthcoming Disney BD Live Network.
"Here, Blu-ray owners will be able to acquire studio updates, download new trailers and use their accumulated reward points to obtain wallpapers, ringtones, avatars and many other new exciting possibilities," he said.
