Sense of deja vu in latest European report on HD adoption

hd_ready_logo.pngScreen Digest's latest report on the state of HDTV take up in Europe makes for familiar reading.

Currently, just under one in five European households has at least one HD ready television, but only one per cent of them (around one million in total) is watching high definition broadcasts

By 2012, although 85% of European households will have a high definition TV (not surprising, as it's near impossible to buy a TV which isn't HD ready now) only 20% of those owners will have access to HD broadcasts.

The problem continues to be a lack of content, particularly free-to-air content. High definition broadcasts are still the primary domain of pay TV operators, such as Sky in the UK.

The situation may improve as digital switchover takes place across Europe in the next few years, however this isn't guaranteed. The report suggests it could be the year 2015 before HD content is readily available for free.

The figures are understandable seeing as there are no HD channels on terrestrial and there are no guaranteed plans for any soon.

Unless someone brings out a sattelite dish that we can stick in the loft like our regular aerial we will be without HD content, via tv at least, for many years to come!
