Toshiba today announced three new high definition LCD TV series, including the RV Series with 100Hz technology and the ZF Series featuring Toshiba's image upscaling technology.
ZF Series
Toshiba claims that its ZF Series is the first to offer integrated image upscaling technology, which considering it utilises the proprietary Resolution+ system is not surprising.
It means that, if you don't get your hands on Toshiba's latest upscaling DVD player, the TV can do the work for you instead.
As we've touched upon before, the system works by putting a powerful processor to work on reviewing adjacent areas of each frame, searching for similar waveforms, and combining pixel information to produce enhanced edges and an improvement in perceived depth and texture of the final picture.
Putting the technology in the TV, Toshiba hopes to improve on the mass of standard definition content that consumers are still watching on their expensive TVs. "While we're making great progress in the development of image display technology, consumers are currently restricted by the lack of free-to-air HD content available," said Sascha Lange, Head of Marketing, Consumer Products, Toshiba Europe. "The majority of broadcast television consumed today is still watched in standard definition, most of which is quite significantly compressed. With Resolution+ technology, we're able to offer consumers the ability to instantly upgrade whatever it is they might choose to watch - broadcast, standard DVD or otherwise - to near high definition quality. There is a significant improvement in the quality of the final image, and we're very excited by the benefits this technology can offer."
The XF Series also utilises Toshiba's Active
Vision M100 HD 100Hz picture processing and 5:5 pulldown sequencing, 24fps compatibility, Dynamic Gamma Curve Correction, dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1, Audyssey Equaliser technology for improved audio at low volumes, four HDMI inputs, and REGZA-Link compatibility.
The XF Series will initially come in 40 and 46 inch screen sizes.
RV Series
The Toshiba REGZA RV Series of LCD TVs are the latest to include 100Hz picture processing technology, and come in 37, 42, and 46-inch screen sizes.
They offer full 1080p HD processing, Active Vision M100HD picture processing, 24p compatibility, auto-detection of NTSC 60Hz content, 10-bit colour processing, dynamic contrast ratios of between 18,000:1 and 30,000:1, three HDMI inputs, and REGZA-Link.
Also included is a Game Mode which prevents time lag and delayed response times - crucial for successful gaming. The sets also feature a real power off button (like TVs used to).
Available from October, with pricing to be confirmed.
XV Series
Toshiba's REGZA XV Series is an entry-level high definition LCD TV range that still offers full 1080p, and two new screen sizes -- 46 and 52 inches -- have been announced.
All sets in the series undergo a slight change in design, with existing technology still present, including Active Vision LCD picture processing, dynamic contrast ratio of up to 30,000:1, Luma Sens auto-contrasting, three HDMI inputs, and REGZA-Link.
The new screen sizes and designs will be available from October, prices to be confirmed.
