Linksys has announced its latest Dual-N band wireless router (WRT610N) offering optimised streaming for high definition content across a home network.

Being dual band, it allows use of both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency spectrums, which should allow the router to find a clear channel even in the most crowded of airspace.

The 5GHz channel will be specifically used for the streaming of high bandwidth, time-critical data such as video and audio. Network performance automatically gives priority to high definition video without the user needing to configure it, though there's still room for prioritising certain traffic such as from games consoles.

Of course, for users to take full advantage of the system, other wireless equipment will need to use the "N" Wi-Fi specification. However, many new devices, particularly PCs, are being fitted with the faster technology. It's still possible to wire devices into the router when performance is absolutely critical.

Available from the end of August, it's not cheap (£149.99), but if you've the dream of a wireless home without compromising on data speed, it could be the answer.
