Reports suggest that Microsoft -- long time backer of Toshiba's now defunct HD DVD format, and always opposed to the idea of building Blu-ray into any of its hardware -- will enable Blu-ray disc burning as a native feature in an update to its Windows operating system.
Users of Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2003 / 2008 will have the option of burning Blu-ray discs without having to install third-party apps.
The move would make it the first major operating system to include native support.
Surprising? Possibly, but it doesn't detract from the company's belief in downloads as the future for movies. It just makes it easier for those who want to use Blu-ray (and there are plenty of PCs with built in high definition drives) to do so.
