Sony has suggested that US sales of Blu-ray players and discs has fallen short of previous forecasts.
A target of five million Blu-ray players sold worldwide this year will not be met, according to the head of Sony's US electronics unit, Stan Glasgow.
He said that consumers may adopt Blu-ray players if the cost of movies comes down.
"They (movie studios) need to make money, and the packaged media (discs) is a critical way for them to make money so I understand their problems also," he said. "But I'd love to see those prices come down, as well as the price of Blu-ray players, to drive adoption."
He said that sluggish sales of high definition TVs were also causing problems, and that the Consumer Electronics Association's prediction of a 3.5 per cent growth in the fourth quarter for the industry as a whole was unlikely to be met.
Some American consumers may be hoping for some high-tech bargains on Black Friday next week, but with confidence low, fewer people are putting down large amounts of cash (or credit) on home entertainment hardware.
