Sony claims increasing popularity of BD Live

BluraylogoBD-Live hasn't had the best of starts, with a number of Blu-ray players unable to support Profile 2.0 functionality, and some titles causing massive problems for online servers, but Sony reckons that the interactive add-ons are becoming increasingly popular.

Sony's Vice President, Rich Marty, has said that consumers are engaging with BD-Live, claiming it to be a "killer application".

You'd expect Sony to talk up any feature of the Blu-ray disc format, but if the numbers are accurate, Sony's BD-Live content servers have reached the one million hit mark.

What we don't know is where these hits are coming from, and indeed what constitutes a "hit". Does the server get hit each time a user plays a BD-Live enabled disc? Do users cause multiple hits if they view additional content, as would be the case on a regular web server?

A million hits may not be bad for a fledgling system. It would be interesting to get some statistics from the other studios pushing out BD-Live discs. The overall Blu-ray user base is so relatively small at present, and the subset of those with interactive discs is even less, so there's a lot of potential for growth. It may be a bit early to suggest that BD-Live is a killer app, though.
