Disney to release dual-format movies with both DVD and Blu-ray in the box

disney.pngSupposedly in a bid to ease the consumer confusion over high definition versus DVD formats, and to ensure that customers don't feel they've invested in outdated media, Disney has decided that it will launch a number of its classic films in a two disc box set - one DVD and one Blu-ray of the same film.

This year's "DVD Combo Pack" releases will include High School Musical 3: Senior Year (coming February 16^th ), Pinocchio 70^th Anniversary Platinum Edition (March 9^th ), and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition (October).

Of course it means the packs are going to cost more (no mention of how much in the press release) but Disney are selling the idea to both Blu-ray player owners and non alike.

Those without a Blu-ray player now will know that

if they invest in a player in the future they'll be able to watch a higher quality version of the film they've purchased. Those who already have a Blu-ray player have a second disc for using in other standard DVD players around the house.

That's the theory, anyway. Will it catch on? Time will tell.
