Though Russell T Davies is probably right when he suggests people won't stop watching Doctor Who just because it's not in high definition, there's no doubt that a HD version of the hit sci-fi show would be amazing.
The main issue cited has always been that of the number of special effects used, in comparison to a show like Torchwood.
Still, there have been glimmers of hope and now it seems that the forthcoming Doctor Who specials are being shot in high definition.
According to Den of Geek, Planet of the Dead has already started filming in HD. Interestingly, executive producer for Dr Who, Julie Gardner, said that the switch to high-def had been planned since the show's return in 2005. She had previously said that "it would take more time for us to do our post-production... and I genuinely love the look that we've managed to achieve with our [directors of photography] and our grade on Doctor Who." Of course, that statement never ruled out the possibility of switching when the time was right.
Assuming this is correct (there's been no official press release from the BBC as far as I can see) it's good news for fans, though there's no news on whether Series 5 will also be filmed in HD.
