Toshiba announces huge range of REGZA TVs

toshiba-regza-sv.jpgToshiba has just announced a huge new range of high definition TVs and DVD players, so here we go with a rundown of what's on offer.

First up is the REGZA SV series, full 1080p TVs available in 46 and 55-inch screen sizes, which the company says is its most advanced LCD TV to date.

It's the first of Toshiba's sets to include an RGB LED backlight that improves the colour gamut and can employ local dimming for a larger dynamic contrast ratio: 2,000,000:1 in fact. There's also 10-bit image processing, and the TV is powered by Toshiba's MetaBrain engine which includes a number of interesting new technologies for improving the picture quality.

Active Vision M200HD combines 100Hz technology and intelligent backlight scanning for a smoother picture similar to 200Hz technology, but presumably at a lower cost.

Resolution+ technology is useful for standard definition video sources, enhancing edge detail for a sharper more defined image. Sounds similar to the upscaling technology found in Toshiba's DVD players.

Audio-wise, there's Dolby Volume that ensures constant volume levels across programmes and inputs.

There's also four HDMI inputs, USB and PC input, and the Deep Lagoon design theme means that the exterior screen sits flush with the front of the TV frame. The effect is created by a Full Crystal Panel that sits over the front of the TV, creating a unique design effect while also improving contrast and colour ratios. The frame itself is a stunning gloss black with gradual colour gradation fading to white on the outer extremities to create a tapered effect.

Available from April.

Next up is the REGZA ZV series, available in 42-, 47- and 55-inch screen sizes. It features many of the same features as the SV series, only without the RGB LED backlight and hence with a reduced 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

toshiba-regza-xv.jpgThe REGZA XV series, available in 32-, 37-, 42- and 46-inch screen sizes, has a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, but otherwise most of the same features as the ZVs.

Both series are available from May.

toshiba-regza-rv.jpgThe REGZA RV series are full 1080p sets available in 32-, 37- and 42-inch screen sizes. They also have a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and Active Vision II picture processing engine. Available from April.

toshiba-dv61.jpgAlso available from June is the DV61 series, high definition TVs featuring built-in DVD players. Available in 19-, 22- and 26-inch screen sizes and offering 720p high definition, other features include at least one HDMI input, integrated digital tuner and full DVD playback support.

The AV63 series offers either 720p or 1080p support, depending on screen size, as well as four HDMI inputs, Resolution+, Active Vision II picture processing and Dolby Digital Plus. Available from April.

Next up is the REGZA AV61 series, an entry-level set of TVs available in 26-, 32- and 37-inch screen sizes. These 720p sets offers three HDMI inputs, integrated digital tuner and Nicam stereo. Available from April.

Also available will be small-screen AV61 models (19- and 22-inch).

Full pricing details to be confirmed.

Its good to see Toshiba starting to use LED backlights in their SV range, it adds a new level off ability to the top of the range models and from the benefits they produce they're definately the way forward for LCD televisions.

Are these TVs out yet? If so, I haven't heard anything about them!

Having read up on the Metabrain technology, it looks quite interesting, with one function being to smooth SD sources so that they look better on large HD screens. This sounds like a great idea - one I'm surprised other manufacturers haven't taken on board - bearing in mind the number of people who watch SD Freeview on their TVs.
