Despite denials from the top, the rumours surrounding a high definition Wii just won't go away.
The "prediction" of a HD Wii by 2010, which will have the effect of badly knocking Sony off its pedestal, comes from Wedbush Morgan (a securities firm, apparently, not the brand of tea Jonathan Ross drinks).
You'd be forgiven for missing the announcement, coming as it did in the "Money for Nothing: How Ancillary Revenues Can Extend The Console Cycle" report.
"We would expect such a console to be fully backward compatible with the current Wii, but would expect the new console to have additional features and functionality," it claims, also suggesting "Wii Plus" as the unoriginal name.
Now we all know that the real plus point of the Wii, which has made it so popular, is its sheer playability. A lot of people with Wiis really don't care that it's not high definition, although there are issues with how poor the picture looks on some HDTVs when upscaled.
A HD Wii shouldn't spoil playability, so long as it doesn't affect performance. Will it knock Sony? Different gaming markets, on the whole, but it probably won't make the Wii less popular (especially if the original is still available) provided that it's priced right.
Expect a denial from Nintendo, or silence, in the next few days.
