3D technology is revolutionising the way we watch TV at home. A 3D TV allows you to watch 3D films from the comfort of your sofa, without the cost of going to the cinema; which can be an expensive experience, and one made even more costly if you choose to watch a 3D film.
With growing numbers of 3D films available on DVD and Blu-ray, and 3D TV channels showing entertainment, movies and sport, now is the time to invest in this exciting technology.
There are two main types of 3D TV; active and passive. Active 3D TVs utilise hi-tech glasses, which are powered separately, whereas passive 3D uses less complicated glasses. While there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems, active 3D is generally regarded as having the better picture quality.
As this technology is still in its infancy it makes sense not to simply opt for the cheapest 3D TV; this could leave you with some problems. Panasonic is widely acknowledged to be the market leader in 3D TVs. With a Panasonic 3D TV you generally get a quality product with great picture quality. That's not to say that you can't find a great deal on some Panasonic 3D TVs online.
So, what are the best films available to watch in 3D?
Avatar
Quite simply the most groundbreaking film of recent years, Avatar has not only brought 3D into the mainstream, it has also set the benchmark for future 3D releases. A hugely immersive world and earth-shattering 3D effects, this film is not to be missed when it eventually arrives on Blu-ray in its full 3D form.
Up
The engrossing story of an old man's adventures, Up was one of the first 3D films to really capture the imaginations of audiences, and it was rewarded with the Oscar for Best Animated Picture. As with Avatar, the success of the 3D in this film lies not with objects flashing out of the screen at the audience, but rather in the environments that it creates.
How To Train Your Dragon
An emotion-filled, heart-stopping animated adventure about a boy who discovers that the dragons which his people fear, and have been fighting, may actually be the key to their very survival. This is a tale of unlikely friendship and a battle against prejudice. The climatic end scene is nail-biting to the extreme, as the hero attempts to overcome huge odds.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Thirteen years after its original release, this classic film has finally received the 3D treatment. You may be surprised to discover that this stop-motion film works wonderfully with 3D. In fact it has been heralded as one of the very best conversions around.
Alice In Wonderland
OK, so Tim Burton's version of this classic story may not work perfectly in 3D, but it's certainly worth watching, if only for Steven Fry's Cheshire Cat. Dark, bizarre, funny and filled with endless quirky characters this is surely a 3D classic.
Coraline
A scary, gothic tale of near-legendary status, Coraline is the story of a girl who visits a mirror world that is, initially at least, much more fun than her own. The catch is that if she wants to stay she has to let her larger-than-life Other Mother poke out her eyes and replace them with buttons! This is a wonderfully produced stop-motion film, with characters that can express a seemingly impossible number of facial expressions and exquisitely designed sets.
Toy Story 3
Woody, Buzz and the gang return for once last adventure in this feel-good family film. The 3D really adds a great deal of depth and exhilaration to this already near-perfect animated film. Be prepared for tears at the ending, although at least the 3D glasses will hide them from the rest of your family.
My Bloody Valentine
This wouldn't be much of a list if it didn't include something for horror lovers. Horror films have always worked well in 3D, after all who doesn't appreciate flying body limbs, spraying blood and closer-than-comfort scares? There's no more hiding behind the sofa, with 3D horror the action comes out into your living room. My Bloody Valentine, while not revolutionary, is a solid B movie filled with jumps, blood and more than a few laughs; good fun all round.
So, there is a rundown of a few classic 3D movies. Some are already on 3D Blu-ray or DVD, some will be heading in that direction soon; and it's safe to say that, with many more 3D TV channels in the pipeline, it won't be long before the rest are coming direct to your 3D TV.
